Section Description

Railway transportation demand for both freight and passengers is increasing throughout the world. A special characteristic of the railway system is that the vehicle and infrastructure are extremely dependent on each other. An understanding of the dynamic interaction between vehicle and track is crucial for an engineer working in this sector. The course starts with a brief description of the vehicle and the track. The dynamic interaction between vehicle and track is then divided into the quasistatic part and the real dynamic interaction. Quasistatic vehicle track interaction deals with how to design curves with regard to curve radius and cant to achieve comfortable curve negotiation. The equations of motion needed to evaluate the vibration comfort in the vehicle and to determine the critical hunting speed are derived. Analysis methods such as calculation of eigenvalues and frequency response functions are explained and trained with help of exercises. The kinematic wheel-rail interactio
