Physics 280 - Extra-Credit Essay Opportunity A

2016 Physics 280 Extra-Credit Essay Opportunity A (ECEO-A)

Attend the Physics Colloquium: "The Iran Nuclear Deal" by Professor Fred Lamb. It will take place from 4:00-5:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 3, in 141 Loomis Laboratory.

In order for us to be able to accept and grade your essay, you must sign the special sign-in sheet that will be at the back of the seminar room.

After attending this event, you must submit a report that answers the prompt stated below. You will submit only one version (extra-credit essays are not revised).

Please think critically about the colloquium and analyze the information it provides and the arguments Professor Lamb makes:

Your report must be at least 1.5 pages but no more than 2.0 pages in length.

Choose one aspect of Fred Lamb's talk that you find interesting or important and answer the following questions. Your chosen topic may include a regulation or technology already in place [a], or it may include a proposed plan for the future [b]. Make sure to pick a topic that is appropriate for the specified essay length.

[a] How has the technology or regulation has impacted Iran's nuclear program? Use Fred Lamb's talk (and any outside research of your own) to make a case for why or why not your chosen technology or regulation has been beneficial to limiting nuclear proliferation.

[b] How has the history of Iran's nuclear program shaped the proposed plan for regulations or monitoring technolgies? Use Fred Lamb's talk (and any outside research of your own) to make a case for why or why not your chosen regulation or technology will be beneficial to limiting nuclear proliferation.

Assume your audience is a typical University of Illinois student, but not a student in Physics 280. Begin each paragraph with a strong topic sentence and omit any information that is not essential for your arguments. Make your paragraphs clear, concise, and to the point. Avoid repetition and unnecessary words, especially adjectives and adverbs, and use active voice.

The Student Handbook provides complete guidance on how to format and submit an extra-credit essay and how the score you earn on an extra-credit essay is counted in computing your total course score. Be sure to review the writing assignment submission checklist in the Handbook before you turn in your essay!

In order to receive credit for your report, you must upload an electronic copy by 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 10th.
