Hi everyone! To enable you to study for the MIDTERM on Thursday (Nov 12, in class period) there is no homework this week. All office hours and discussion sections are as normal, except we will attempt to move Thursday's office hours to Wednesday (same time, same room). Thus: homework 11 DOES NOT EXIST :-) and the next one will be homework 12. Midterm 2 will focus on the material from Homeworks 6-10, Lectures 6A-11B, and Discussions 6-12. Of course you also need to be familiar with the topics from Midterm 1 since *inevitably* new material builds on old material, but the focus will be on the new stuff: energy, collisions, constraints (rolling, string-length, etc), equilibrium & small oscillations, calculus of variations, and Lagrangian mechanics. If you would like to try a PRACTICE EXAM, you can find last year's first midterm in this folder. The solution is in the secure folder, but as always, it is best to try the problems BEFORE looking at the solutions. The formula sheets that will be provided are in the top-level folder: Formulae-1Dmath, -3Dmath, and -Midterm2. The instructions are the same as for Midterm 1: (a) NO CALCULATORS are allowed during any exams, and (b) the midterm will run a FULL 90 MINUTES, i.e. it will eat up both class time and the 10-minute break after class. If you have a class or other appointment right after lecture period, I will give you a signed note at the exam that you can give to your other instructor to explain your lateness. Cheers! Naomi
