Welcome to Physics 214! This is a fun but short class which introduces you to the fundamentals of quantum physics.
Lecture
Here is what you'll need for lecture:
- Read the prelecture notes and complete the checkpoint questions on smart.physics. Do this BEFORE each lecture so that you are prepared for it! The checkpoints are due at 8 AM the day of the lecture on the subject.
- The lectures will be recorded and available on mediaspace. After the lectures are delivered, the PDFs will be available on the syllabus.
Discussion
Students must be on time and prepared for discussion.
- Students arriving more than 10 minutes late for discussion will receive a reduced grade (see grading page).
- You will be graded on your work during the discussion section.
Laboratory
Students must be on time and prepared for labs. Arriving more than 10 minutes late will make you unable to participate in the lab.

Homework
- Homework assignments are on smart.physics.
- Consult the course schedule for due dates.
Exams
- View Formula Sheet, which will be available to you during the exam.
- There are two hour exams and a final exam. See the course schedule.
- Exams will be administered at the the CBTF.
- All exams must be scheduled in advance using the CBTF scheduling system.
- Review the exam information page for details.
- Read and understand the information posted here before the first exam.
Excused Absences
- Please submit your excused absence no later than 12 business days after your absence via the Excused Absences application.
- For more information regarding this course's excuses policy, please refer to the Attendance Policy page.
Academic Integrity
- All activities in this course, including documentation submitted for petition for an excused absence, are subject to the Academic Integrity rules as described in Article 1, Part 4, Academic Integrity, of the Student Code.
Use of Generative AI Tools
In this course, artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as chatbots, text generators, paraphrasers, summarizers, or solvers, may be used to get guidance on assignments except for exams, as long as you do so in an ethical and responsible manner. Like other tools, they can be used to help you learn, but not to create submitted work for assignments like homeworks, checkpoint, prelabs and labs, or discussion problems. AI can be a tutor or supplemental TA, but not a replacement for your independent thinking.
This means that:
- You must not use AI tools to replace your own thinking or analysis, or to avoid engaging with the course content.
- If you elect to use an AI tool, be transparent and honest about how you did so and how it contributed to your assignment. Provide the name of the AI tool, the date of access, the URL of the interface, and the specific prompt or query you used to generate output incorporated into any assignment submission. Explain what you learned from the AI tool, how you verified its accuracy, how you integrated its output with your own work, and how you acknowledged its limitations.
- You are accountable for any mistakes or errors made by an AI tool. Do not rely on the AI tool to produce flawless or correct results. Always check and edit the output before submitting your work.
Using AI tools in an unethical or irresponsible manner, such as copying or paraphrasing the output without citation or transparency, using the output as your own work without verification or integration, or using the output to misrepresent your knowledge or skills, is considered a violation of Academic Integrity in Physics 214. If you have any questions about what constitutes ethical and responsible use of AI tools, please consult with the instructor before submitting your work.
