Section Description

SPECIAL TOPICS IN QUANTUM CONDENSED MATTER. This course will visit some of the exciting developments that have taken place in condensed matter physics in the past decades, some also applicable to cold atomic physics. Emphasis will be placed on strongly correlated phenomena at the quantum many-body level. Topics explored will include a subset of the following: graphene and carbon nanotubes, quantum dots, superconductivity, quantum Hall systems, anyons and fractional statistics, Bose-Hubbard systems and critical phenomena. While the course will develop various theoretical techniques, it will be made accessible to anyone actively interested in condensed matter theory and experiment. Register for section CM2 (55135) or for section CM4 (55134). CM2 meets with CM4 but carries only two hours of credit. CM2 is suited for those interested in only an overview of the concepts and topics. Requirements for CM2 include attendance, some short writings and perhaps a short presentation. The Prere
