James Scholar Credit
Eligibility
To be eligible for James Scholar Honors credit, you must:
- have been accepted as a James Scholar by the due date of the first JS problem set.
- complete the first problem set by the due date.
You are not eligible if you are still a James Scholar Nominee on that date.
The Work
James Scholar Homework Assignments
- JS 1: due 5pm Wednesday, September 27
- JS 2: due 5pm Wednesday, October 11 (Office hour Tuesday Oct 10th 4-5 pm 271 Loomis)
- JS 3: due 5pm Friday, October 27 (Office hour Tuesday Oct 24th 4-5 pm 271 Loomis)
- JS 4: due 5pm Wednesday, November 15 (Office hour Tuesday November 14th 4-5 pm 271 Loomis)
- JS 5: due 5pm Wednesday, December 6 (Office hour Tuesday December 5th 4-5 pm 271 Loomis)
Turn in homework to the Physics 211-212 James Scholar homework box on the second floor of Loomis, on the north side of the building. The homework box is bright yellow and has a black-and-white label which reads "212/211 JAMES SCHOLAR".
Each assignment is due by 5 p.m. on the specified due date. Late assignments will receive zero credit.
Assignments which do not conform to instructions below will also receive zero credit.
Each page of your submission must contain:
- your name
- discussion section
- netid
- the assignment number
The problems are harder than the others in 211; however, we want you to give them your best!
Each problem (three problems per assignment) will be graded out of 10 points. You must maintain an average of about 8/10 in order to receive credit.
There will be 5 assignments, due every 2 or 3 weeks, and timed to avoid scheduling conflicts with hour exams.
Be sure to show a reasonable amount of your work. More is always better than less. If we ask for a numerical answer don't forget the units.
The solution might also involve submission of a graph. You may make the graphs with any software you want or submit the graph as hand-drawn. Don't forget to label the axes of the graphs with the variables plotted, and include units.
Please note that the grades on these assignments DO NOT affect your overall 211 grade IN ANY WAY.
Paperwork
If you are already a James Scholar, you should complete an Honors Credit Learning Agreement form, get it signed, and submit it to your college office.
College of Engineering: you must obtain a paper form. These are available from the undergrad offices of the Physics Department (Loomis 231) or the College of Engineering (206 Engineering Hall).
College of LAS: the whole process can be done online using an EHCLA (electronic HCLA).
How do I get the form signed?
College of Engineering: See your lecturer right after class; he or she will be happy to sign the paper form for you. You must then hand the signed form in to the College office in 206 Eng Hall.
College of LAS: Your electronic eHCLA will be sent by email to the course instructor, which should be your lecturer. They provide a virtual signature by simply replying to the email.
