PHYS 213 James Scholars
NOTE: This information only applies to you if you are taking Physics 213 for Honors credit.
For those of you intending to use Physics 213 to satisfy your James Scholar
requirement for an "honors" course, there are three things you must
do:
1. You must obtain an Honors Credit Learning Agreement from
your college office. It must then be signed either by the PHYS 213 Course director or by a lecturer (Professor Raffi Budakian, budakian@illinois.edu or Professor Paul
Kwiat, kwiat@illinois.edu). The
LAS James scholar program is described here. The
Engineering James Scholar program is described here (main JS page) and here (specific info about
the HCLA). Students in other colleges should consult their
college office.
2. Turn in the three James Scholar assignments by the dates and times indicated
next to each assignment. The assignments will involve simple web-research and
reading of articles. We hope you will find them thought-provoking, and that
they give you a deeper appreciation of thermodynamics/statistical mechanics and
their implications/applications to some of the latest cutting edge research and
technology.
3. Remember to include your name, netID,
and Discussion section! Your
assignments must be turned in electronically in either pdf, text, or Microsoft Word 2003 or later versions.
4. The expected assignment length is 1-2 pages,
single-spaced, 12 point font (Times New Roman is preferred). As a rough rule of
thumb, preparation will require ~ 1 hour/week (average) of your time (6-8 hours
total).
5. Use the following format in naming your uploaded files:
NetID_P213_JSx (x=assignment number)
