Final Exam, Thursday May 12, 8:00 - 11:00 am in Loomis 151
Here are some notes about the final exam:

Spring Break office hours
There will be no office hours the Sunday before Spring Break or during Spring Break week. Normal office hours resume Sunday Mar 27 at 2 - 4 pm, i.e. the day before classes restart. The building will be locked, so just call me at 333-7291 and I'll come down and open the door for you. I'll post signs on the Loomis doors with my phone number in case you forget it.

Midterm Exam, Tuesday Mar 15 in lecture period
Rules: The Midterm exam will cover Weeks 1 - 7 plus Lecture 8 of the course, namely Special Relativity and associated math. You will be allowed to use a "cheat-sheet" of notes that you have prepared and taken into the exam. This sheet is to be written on one sheet of 8.5" x 11" paper in your own handwriting, and can be on both sides of the paper. Finally, no calculators are allowed in either exam. (Don't worry, you won't need one. :-))

Office Hours for Midterm: We're rearranging our office hours this week so that they are all before the exam:
         Sunday Mar 13 2 - 4 pm Loomis 464 (Rezvan Shahoei)
Monday Mar 14      noon - 1 pm      Loomis 276      (Hong Yan Shih)
Monday Mar 14 3 pm - 5 pm Loomis 276 (Naomi Makins)
Monday Mar 14 5 pm - 7 pm Loomis 276 (Ka Wai Lo)
Tue & Wed office hours cancelled (no homework due this week). Notice the unusual room (276) for the Monday office hours → it is across the hall from the usual room 271.

Additional Weekly Office Hours
Our graders have kindly agreed to add an additional office hour each week, on Tuesday evenings 5:10 - 7:10 pm. Also, to make my post-lecture office hour more formal and more comfortable for you to work, I've reserved the usual room (Loomis 271) for that purpose. The new office hour schedule is summarized in the Office Hours section below.

Storm Extension for Homework 2
Due to the storm this week, and campus being closed on Wednesday, Rezvan will hold her office hours on Thursday, Feb 3 instead. The time and place are the same as usual: 5 - 7 pm in Loomis 271. The due date for homework 2 is also changed, to Friday, Feb 4, 5 pm.

Homework assignments will be posted online
The homework assignments will be posted to the course web site each week by Saturday afternoon. They are due by 2 pm on the following Thursday, and must be deposited in the 225 homework box in the 2nd floor overpass between Loomis and MRL. Click the Homework & Solutions link at the top to download or view the assignments as PDF documents.

  • Policies

    Course Grading
Your grade in this course will be based on successful completion of the weekly homework assignments (40%), participation in the Discussion Sessions (5%), performance on a mid-term exam (15%), and performance on the final exam (40%).

Late Policy for Attendance at Discussion Sessions
Attendance counts for 5% of your grade in the course. If you're 8 minutes or more late, you will receive only half credit for that week, and if you are 15 minutes or more late it merits zero credit.

    Homework due dates and time
Homework is due at 2 pm on Thursdays. Your solutions are to be deposited in the Course Homework Box that is located on the second floor of Loomis Lab, at the entrance to the overpass to the Materials Research Lab. (MRL).

    Late Policy for Homework
If you don't make the deadline, you lose 10% of your grade for each day that your homework is late. You can not get any credit for homework that is more than six days late.
