Homework
- Homework is a very important part of this course and will be
assigned
weekly.
- Homework sets will be assigned on Wednesday of each week.
- The assignments will be due the following Wednesday, at 11:30 am
- Homework sets should be placed in the 326 homework box (located
on the north side of Loomis Lab, between rooms 267 and 271 LLP) by 11:30
am on the day of the due date.
- Solutions will be posted on Wednesdays, a week after the
due date (unless otherwise announced).
- A passing score for the homework part of the course is 60% of the total points possible.
- Unless a valid excuse is given, homework sets which are submitted
late will receive a 10% penalty per day (Saturday and Sunday count as one day in this regard), up to 50% for the first week (Wednesday of the following week). Homework
sets which are turned in more than a week late will receive no credit.
Problem Sessions
- The Problem Sessions will be held on Wednesday evenings. Each student is assigned to one Discussion Session per week. The schedule is as follows:
- Wednesday, 6:00 - 7:00 pm, in 236 Loomis Lab.
- Wednesday, 7:00 - 8:00 pm, in 236 Loomis Lab.
- Wednesday, 8:00 - 9:00 pm, in 236 Loomis Lab.
- The problems will be handed out at the start of the session. Solutions to
the problems will be handed out at the end.
- Students are encouraged to work in groups of three or four to solve the
problems, and to ellicit the help of the Discussion TA in understanding the
material.
- The sessions will cover material which is relevant to the current lectures
and homework assignments.
- The solutions will not be graded. However, credit will be given for participation
(5% of the course points).
- For students who miss a problem session:
- Problems used in sessions in previous weeks and their solutions will
be available on the web.
Grading
Your grade will be based on your performance on the final exam, the two midterm exams, and the problem sessions. The approximate
weight assigned to each part of your grade is:
- Midterm exam #1 will count for 20% and it will cover all the material presented to that point in the course.
- Midterm exam #2 will count for 25% and it will cover all the material presented to that point in the course.
- Final exam will be worth 50% and will test all the material covered
in the course.
- Attendance at, and participation in the Problem Sessions will count
for 5% of your grade.
PLEASE NOTE: In order to get a passing grade for the course, a student must pass the final exam and earn a passing score on the homework.
