Physics 435 Advanced Electromagnetism I

Welcome to Physics 435 -- Class starts on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. The class is taught by Prof. Hooberman.

Physics 435 is the first semester of a year-long course in Classical Electromagnetism. Electromagnetism is more than just a way of computing electric and magnetic fields: it is the first field theory, the first gauge theory, and a deep dive into the way physical theories of nature are structured. The text is Introduction to Electrodynamics by David Griffiths. I will usually refer to material from the 3rd edition, though as far as I can tell the 4th edition is identical.

Midterm 2 information

Midterm 2 will be in class on Friday March 29. It will cover Griffith's Chapters 3 and 4, including all material up to and including Lecture 18. This equation sheet will be provided, which has all the equations needed for midterm 2, along with a table of integrals. No other materials are allowed.

If you have DRES accommodations, please immediately contact the DRES office to schedule your exam.

A practice exam and solutions are available here.

Equation sheet

The focus of this course will be on physics rather than mathematics or rote memorisation of formulae. To guide you, relevant equations are collected on this equation sheet, which will be made available to you during exams.

Please also find here the equation sheet that includes all relevant equations for midterm 2, which will be available to you during the 2nd in-class midterm on Fri Mar 29.

Academic Integrity

All activities in this course, including documentation submitted for petition for an excused absence, are subject to the Academic Integrity rules as described in Article 1, Part 4, Academic Integrity, of the Student Code.
