Physics 486
Spring 2011

Course Information

The course structure consists of reading, lectures, discussion, and homework. There will also be two exams: one in-class midterm exam and a comprehensive final exam.

  • Reading assignments will be given for every lecture. Please try to read before lecture, as you'll get a lot more out of lecture if you already have some idea what's going on. Reading assignments for each week are listed in the syllabus. The texts and other books are described here.
  • Lectures are Tu & Th 9:30 - 10:50 AM in 144 Loomis.
  • Lecture notes, including worked example problems that we may or may not have time to do in class, will be posted after each lecture on the course website syllabus.
  • Each of you should sign up for a discussion section (Tuesday 7-7:50 PM in 143 Loomis or Wednesday 8-8:50 PM) in 139 Loomis. The primary focus will be to work on problems related to the week's material. Attendance of one of the discussion sections is required, and participation in the discussion section comprises 10% of your grade. Solutions to Discussion problems will be posted on the syllabus.
  • There will be a homework assignment on Tuesday of each week. The assignments will be due at the beginning of class the subsequent Tuesday (or earlier in the yellow 486 box in the Loomis-MRL, second floor corridor). Homework assignments and solutions will be posted on the course syllabus. Homework is 30% of your grade. There will be a 50% penalty for late homework. Late homework may be submitted up to one week after the original due date. Homework will not be accepted after that.
  • The midterm exam will constitute 20% of your grade and will cover material in the first half of the course.
The final exam will constitute 40% of your grade and is comprehensive.

If you cannot attend a class or complete your homework due to illness or other valid excuse, please give the McKinley slip (or other note) to Kate Shunk in the Undergraduate Courses office (233 Loomis).
