Physics 487
Spring 2011

Course Information

The course structure consists of reading, lectures, discussion, and homework. There will also be three exams, two in-class exams and the final exam.

  • You should read the relevant sections in the text book before class. These sections are listed in the syllabus. Coming to class with this preparation will greatly enhance your understanding of the material. The texts and other books are described here.
  • Lectures are Tu & Th 9:30 - 10:50 AM in 158 Loomis.
  • Lecture notes will be posted on the course website syllabus.
  • Each of you should sign up for a discussion section. The primary focus will be to work on problems related to the week's material. Attendance at one of the discussion sections is required, and participation in the discussion section comprises 10% of your grade. The discussion grade is based strictly on attendence and participation.
  • There will be a homework assignment most weeks. The assignments will be due at noon on Friday in the 487 box in the Loomis-MRL, second floor corridor. Homework assignments and solutions will be posted on the course syllabus. Homework is 30% of your grade. There will be a 30% penalty for late homework. Late homework may be submitted until the following Wednesday at 5pm when the previous week's assignment will be returned in the discussion section.
  • The two midterm exams will constitute 30% of your grade.
The final exam will constitute 30% of your grade.

If you cannot attend a class or complete your homework due to illness or other valid excuse, please give the McKinley slip (or other note) to Kate Shunk in the Undergraduate Courses office (233 Loomis). If you miss a midterm exam with a valid, documented excuse, you will receive an "EX" grade (excused absence) and your other exams will be re-weighted to make up the missed points (i.e. they will count more). There are no make-up exams.
