Welcome to General Relativity X !
Announcements will be posted here as necessary.
This is the main website for the UIUC Physics Department graduate course PHYS/ASTR 598 on General Relativity X: Compact Binaries Edition. This one-semester course covers advanced topics in Einstein's theory of General Relativity, focusing on the dynamics of compact binaries. Emphasis will be put on widely separated binaries of comparable mass ratio, where the post-Newtonian approximation is valid. The topics discussed will include a subset of the following: orbital dynamics of binary systems, three-body interactions and the Kozai-Lidov mechanism, the radiation-reaction force, gravitational waves emitted during inspiral. You can find a detailed course description, together with an explanation of the target audience for this class, in the course description and syllabus.
Time and location
Time: | Tue and Thu at 12:30 - 13:50 CST |

NEW: Final exam
The final exam will be a take-home exam. The problems will be assigned on Dec 10 at 3pm, and due on Dec 13 at 9am.
Homework
Homework sets will become available online on Tuesdays, starting in week 2. They are usually due on Thursday, and should be submitted in-class on paper. This may change.
Textbooks
We will mainly use "Gravity: Newtonian, Post-Newtonian, Relativistic" by Eric Poisson and Clifford Will.. This and additional references for further reading are listed under Textbooks .
