Welcome to Physics 401: Classical Laboratory!
We are excited to have you join us on this journey into the fascinating world of experimental physics. This course is designed to equip you with advanced laboratory skills, analytical techniques, and communication abilities - key tools for conducting independent research in physics and related fields.
What to Expect
-
Dive Deep into Physics: Explore foundational concepts beyond introductory courses, such as Fourier domain signal analysis, synchronous detection, wave propagation in transmission lines, and magnetic hysteresis, etc. These theoretical ideas will come to life through hands-on experiments.
-
Master Research Methodology: Learn to systematically plan, execute, and analyze experiments, developing the critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for research.
-
Achieve Technical Proficiency: Gain hands-on experience with tools like oscilloscopes, lock-in amplifiers, etc, equipping you to tackle complex experimental challenges with confidence.
-
Excel in Quantitative Analysis: Understand how to handle uncertainties, manage noise, propagate errors, and apply statistical rigor to derive meaningful insights from your data.
-
Polish Communication Excellence: Develop the ability to present your findings professionally through well-organized lab reports and engaging oral presentations that effectively communicate complex ideas.
Through this course, you’ll build a strong foundation for academic and professional success in science and engineering. Whether your aspirations lie in groundbreaking research or innovative applications in industry, Physics 401 will be a crucial stepping stone toward achieving your goals.
Announcements
Our first lecture will be on Monday, 27 Jan in 136 Loomis. We'll be going over how the course works, and preparing for the first lab activity.
Preparing for the first week
- Please read the Course Description and Class Policy before the first lecture!
- LAB: Lab will meet the first week. Be sure to check which section time you're registered for.
- Check out the Computing Tools page and start preparing some of the basics you'll need:
- Origin Pro for data analysis (use of other tools is welcome, but not as well-supported).
- Campus VPN access, for software and shared data access from home.
