Week 6 (2/24-28) Congratulations on completing Test 2. We will open the test questions for you to review in PrairieLearn early this week. Test 3 will cover topics from Lectures 8-11.

Registering After the First Day of Classes

If you registered after the first day of classes but before the 10th day of classes, you will not be penalized for assignments or class activities that happened before you were registered. It is your responsibility to make sure you get appropriate credit by doing the following:

Contact your lecturer ASAP to get credit for missed lectures and extensions for online assignments.
Request excused absences using the Excused Absence Application for any discussion or lab meetings you missed.
Review the course materials you missed. Most course materials are available in smartPhysics and in links on the Schedule page. It may take up to 24 hours from when you register for Physics 101 for you to gain login access to these materials.

Course Components Summary

Lecture

We will be using iClicker for participation and bonus points during lecture. You may use physical iclickers or the iClicker Cloud Student app. (more information about setting up iClicker)

Homework

You can access the content at https://smart.physics.illinois.edu/ and you have full access for the first two weeks free of charge. Sometime in the first two weeks you will need to pay for access by purchasing a code through the UIUC bookstore. Details of how to pay for access are available via pdf.

Discussion

Students must be on time and prepared for discussion. Students arriving more than 15 minutes late for discussion will receive a grade of 0% on the discussion group assignment of the day and will not be permitted to take the quiz.

For each discussion section (including the first section) you must have your:
- Laptop or tablet
- Paper and writing utensils
- Calculator
You will work with a group and upload your discussion problems to GradeScope for grading.
You will take an individual quiz in class on PrairieLearn
Quiz retakes will be offered on the following Monday
- Quizzes are timed but not proctored - you may take your quiz wherever is convenient for you
- You must have taken the first quiz in class to be eligible for a retake grade
- Your final quiz grade will be 70% your highest score and 30% your lowest score of the two quiz attempts.
- You are not required to retake the quiz. If you do not retake, your final quiz grade will be your first attempt grade.

Laboratory

Please review the required materials list to see what you need.

Students must be on time and prepared for labs. All lab sections take place in person in 4018 Campus Instructional Facility.

You will do a hands-on Pre-Lab activity in smartPhysics using your IOLab device before every lab.
In your weekly lab section you will work in groups to design and understand experiments and experimental data, also using your IOLab device.
You will upload your lab reports to the gradebook by using this link. You must attend class to receive credit for your lab report.

Excused Absences

Please submit your excused absence no later than 12 business days after your absence via the Excused Absences application.
For more information regarding this course's excuses policy, please refer to the Attendance Policy page.

Academic Integrity

All activities in this course, including documentation submitted for petition for an excused absence, are subject to the Academic Integrity rules as described in Article 1, Part 4, Academic Integrity, of the Student Code.

Use of AI Tools

This course permits you to use artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as chatbots, text generators, paraphrasers, summarizers, or solvers, to get guidance on assignments except for quizzes and exams, as long as you do so in an ethical and responsible manner. Essentially, you can think of these tools as ways to help you learn but not to entirely create work for assignments like discussion problems, prelabs and labs, and James Scholar Projects. AI is more like your tutor or TA, not a replacement for your independent thinking.

This means that you must:

Not use AI tools to replace your own thinking or analysis or to avoid engaging with the course content.
Cite or explain any AI tools you use in written materials you or your group turn in. Provide the name of the AI tool, the date of access, the URL of the interface, and the specific prompt or query you used to generate the output.
Be transparent and honest about how you used the AI tool and how it contributed to your assignment. Explain what you learned from the AI tool, how you verified its accuracy and reliability, how you integrated its output with your own work, and how you acknowledged its limitations and biases.

You are accountable for any mistakes or errors made by the AI tool. Do not rely on the AI tool to produce flawless or correct results. Always check and edit the output before submitting your work. If you discover any inaccuracies or inconsistencies in the output after submission, notify the instructor immediately and correct them as soon as possible.

Using AI tools in an unethical or irresponsible manner, such as copying or paraphrasing the output without citation or transparency, using the output as your own work without verification or integration, or using the output to misrepresent your knowledge or skills, is considered a violation of Academic Integrity in Physics 101. If you have any questions about what constitutes ethical and responsible use of AI tools, please consult with the instructor before submitting your work.
