PHYS 435 :: Physics Illinois :: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Physics 435 Advanced Electromagnetism I

The Final Exam ...

... will take place on Monday, Dec. 11, from 8-11 am in 134 Temple Hoyne Buell Hall. The exam will cover the first half of Griffiths, Chs. 1-7 (Lectures 1-36). The exam will be comprehensive, covering all content in the course, but will emphasize material you saw as part of a homework or discussion problem. The exam will be open book, meaning you can use any static print materials including the text, printouts of lecture notes, homeworks, or a pre-prepared equation sheet of your own making. Electronic devices of any sort are not permitted. Calculators will be neither allowed or needed. The style an format of the exam will be similar to the three hour exam.

Hour Exam III ...

... will take place in class on Wed., Nov. 29. The exam will cover Ch. 5-6 of Griffiths, i.e., Lectures 1-27. Like the last two exams, this one will be open book, meaning you can bring any static print materials including the text, printouts of lecture notes, homeworks, or a pre-prepared equation sheet of your own making. Electronic devices of any sort are not permitted. Calculators will be neither allowed nor needed.

Hour Exam II ...

... will take place in class on Wed., Nov. 1. The exam will cover Ch. 3-4 of Griffiths, i.e., Lectures 1-17. The exam will be open book, meaning you can bring any static print materials including the text, printouts of lecture notes, homeworks, or a pre-prepared equation sheet of your own making. Electronic devices of any sort are not permitted. Calculators will be neither allowed nor needed.

Hour Exam I ...

... will take place in class on Wed., Oct. 4. The exam will cover Ch. 2 of Griffiths, i.e., Lectures 1-7. The exam will be open book, meaning you can bring any static print materials including the text, printouts of lecture notes, homeworks, or a pre-prepared equation sheet of your own making. Electronic devices of any sort are not permitted. Calculators will be neither allowed nor needed.

Here is a sample exam from Fall, 2022 as an illustration of the general format.

Welcome to Physics 435 -- Class starts on Monday, Aug. 21, 2023.

Phys 435 is the first semester of a year-long course in Classical Electrodynamics. E&M is more than just a way of computing E and B fields: It is the first field theory, the first gauge theory, and a deep dive into the way physical theories of nature are structured. The text is Introduction to Electrodynamics by David Griffiths. I will usually refer to material from the 3rd edition, though as far as I can tell the 4th edition is identical.
