Welcome to Phys485: Atomic Physics and Quantum theory
Quantum physics, formulated in the early years of the last century, revolutionized modern science. Beginning with studies of radiating bodies — heated objects, stars, and more — it developed into a conceptual and mathematical framework that completely rebuilt our understanding of matter, radiation, and even the nature of physical reality. It provided foundational insights into everything from superconductivity to astrophysics, and has changed the face of technology through electronics, lasers, NMR/MRI, solar panels, qubits, and much more. In this course will introduce you to the foundations of quantum theory, and give you many glimpses of these wonders along the way.
