Please note that the grades on these assignments DO NOT affect your overall 101 grade IN ANY WAY.
James Scholar Assignment
Your honors credit will be based on an assignment that involves:
- reading a physics-based science article,
- writing a ~ 500 word summary of the article,
- giving a powerpoint presentation on the article to your instructor and the other James Scholar students at a time to be arranged near the end of the semester.
The article must contain Physics 101-related material.
The article must:
- come from a source such as Scientific American,
- must be more than 500 words long,
- and must be approved by your instructor.
In the paper and talk the level of your explanation should be appropriate for teaching the material to junior or senior high school students.
The paper and talk must:
- contain at least one quantitative estimate based on the article, i.e. they should contain an equation relevant to the article into which you substitutenumerical values.
- have correct spelling and grammar
Clarity of exposition will play a role in the evaluation of your paper and your talk.
You should e-mail your instructor a proposal for the article you will read for your project. If possible, provide a photocopy of the article or a link to it if it is available online. Your instructor will get back to you right away (via e-mail) to tell you if your proposal is acceptable, or how to improve it.
You should send your final written report to your instructor via e-mail. Don't forget to put your name, netid, and the assignment name in the header and on your pages.
The instructor will arrange a time for presentations via e-mail to James Scholars in early November.
