Course Description
Introduction
Perturbation theory, variational methods, addition of angular momenta, time-dependent perturbation theory, gauge symmetries. 4 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. Prerequisite: MATH 285; PHY486, PHYS 214; credit or concurrent registration in MATH 415.

Homework
- Homework sets, due dates, solutions, and other course material will be distributed through the course schedule.
If you are registered as an in-person student, you must turn in a physical homework set in the 487 homework box (located on the north side of Loomis Lab, between rooms 267 and 271 Loomis Lab) by 5 pm on the indicated HW due date. For remote registrants, course staff will contact you to set up homework submission. The due date and time will be the same for in-person and remote students.- All HW will be turned in via gradescope. The deadline is still 5 pm US central time on the indicated due date.
- Late homework sets
mustbe deposited in the 487 box as wellcan also be submitted by gradescope. HW submitted up to three days late will receive a penalty of 10%, HW submitted up to 1 week late will receive a penalty of 30%, and HW submitted more than 1 week late will receive no credit. - We will need to have a shortened HW final deadline for any credit before each exam so solutions can be posted. See the Schedule for details.
Exams
- There will be two midterm exams and one final exam.
- Both midterms will be held in class, on (I) Monday Sep 27, and (II) Wednesday Nov 3. A conflict time will be set up to help accommodate remote and quarantining students, with proctoring via Zoom.
